You track AI visibility for law firms by asking AI platforms the same questions your clients ask, then measuring whether your firm appears, how prominently, and which competitors show up instead. ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity each answer differently, so tracking has to cover all of them, by practice area and market.

Watch: Triple Digital acquires ReachOnline.ai (under 1 min)

For years, the big question was simple: where does my firm rank on Google? Today, potential clients ask ChatGPT who the best attorney for their case is.

That creates a new challenge. Does AI know who you are, and is it recommending you?

What is AI visibility for Law Firms?

AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI platforms mention your firm when someone asks for a lawyer. It covers whether you’re named at all, where you appear in the answer, which competitors are recommended instead, and which websites the AI relied on to decide. It’s the AI-era version of your search ranking.

A Google ranking tells you where your page sits in a list. An AI answer usually has no list: it names a few firms and explains why.

If your firm isn’t one of them, the prospect may never see your website at all. That’s why measuring AI visibility has become its own discipline, separate from tracking keyword positions.

Why Aren’t Google Rankings Enough Anymore?

Because a growing share of clients start their search in AI. In a 2026 survey of 1,110 U.S. consumers, nearly 42% said they would use ChatGPT to research which lawyer to hire, up from 9% in 2023. Google still leads at 72%, but half of consumers now use at least one AI answer engine.

Those numbers come from iLawyerMarketing’s 2026 consumer study. The same study found that roughly 1 in 10 consumers would research a law firm entirely through AI, without Google at all.

The shift is sharpest among the clients many firms want most. Consumers aged 45 to 60, prime years for personal injury, family law, and estate matters, led every age group in using AI to research law firms.

So the old question, where does my firm rank on Google, still matters. It just no longer tells the whole story.

How Does AI Decide Which Attorneys to Recommend?

AI builds its answer from what it finds about you across the web: your website, your Google rankings, reviews, legal directories, and publications that mention your firm. Firms with strong, consistent, accurate signals get named. Firms with thin or conflicting information get skipped, or worse, described incorrectly.

Google rankings still feed this process. The same 2026 study cites research showing that sites ranking #1 on Google were mentioned by name in AI answers 32% to 49% of the time, depending on the platform.

Accuracy matters as much as visibility. AI can repeat outdated practice areas, wrong office locations, or results your firm never claimed.

That creates a compliance angle, too. Lawyer advertising rules, like Texas Disciplinary Rule 7.01 and California Rule of Professional Conduct 7.1, prohibit false or misleading communications about a lawyer’s services. The Texas comment notes a lawyer may claim credit for a past result only if they played a substantial role in it.

You can’t control what an AI platform says. You can make sure every source it reads, starting with your own website, is accurate, specific, and verifiable.

How Do you Track Whether AI Recommends Your Firm?

You need technology that asks AI platforms the high-intent questions your clients ask, records which firms get recommended, and repeats it over time. That’s what Triple Digital’s new AI Visibility technology does. It tracks and improves your firm’s presence across AI search, the same way rank tracking measures Google.

The technology comes from ReachOnline.ai, the AI visibility and competitive-intelligence company Triple Digital acquired in October 2026. It covers ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity.

AI visibility tracking measures:

  • Whether your firm is mentioned, and how prominently
  • Which competitors are recommended instead, by practice area and market
  • The questions prospective clients actually ask AI
  • The websites, directories, and publications AI cites in its answers
  • Inaccurate or incomplete information about your firm
  • How AI recommendations change over time

From there, the work becomes practical: fix the gaps, strengthen the sources AI trusts, and measure again.

Does AI Visibility Replace SEO?

No. We aren’t abandoning SEO; we’re preparing firms for where search is going next. Google is still the most-used source for researching attorneys, and strong rankings help AI platforms find and cite your firm. AI visibility adds a second layer: measuring and improving how AI talks about you.

Think of it as one strategy with two scoreboards. Your SEO and authoritative content earns rankings on Google. AEO and AI Overviews optimization structures that content so AI platforms choose it as the answer.

What changes is the measurement. Keyword positions alone can’t tell you whether ChatGPT recommends a competitor every time someone in Houston asks for a car accident lawyer.

What Does the ReachOnline.ai Acquisition Mean for Law Firms?

It means AI visibility becomes part of how Triple Digital measures and grows your firm. ReachOnline.ai technology is being integrated into Triple Digital, including our new Triple Analytics platform. Existing clients get early access to AI visibility benchmarking and reporting, so they can see how AI answers about them change month to month.

Firms new to AI visibility can start with an AI Visibility Audit built for law firms. It compares your firm against selected competitors using high-intent questions tied to valuable case types and your markets, and identifies:

  • Questions where your firm is, or isn’t, recommended
  • Competitors getting more AI visibility
  • The sources shaping AI recommendations
  • Authority and content gaps holding your firm back
  • A prioritized 90-day visibility strategy

The acquisition follows Triple Digital’s recognition by Manage Marketing as a Top Online Marketing Services 2026 provider, which highlighted our work helping smaller law firms compete against national firms.

“Acquiring ReachOnline.ai is the next step,” says Paul Taylor, CEO of Triple Digital. “It expands our ability to help law firms compete as prospective clients increasingly use AI platforms to decide which attorneys to contact.”

From our Houston headquarters, we’ve helped attorneys across the country compete online for years. Now we’re preparing them for the AI era.

AI Visibility for Law Firms: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check my Firm’s AI Visibility Myself?

You can ask ChatGPT or Gemini who the best lawyer for your case type is in your city. But one search is a snapshot. AI answers vary by platform, wording, and day, so reliable tracking means running many questions repeatedly and comparing results against competitors.

Which AI Platforms Matter Most For Law Firms?

ChatGPT leads among consumers researching lawyers, but Google AI Overviews and Gemini also matter because they’re built into Google search. Tracking should cover ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity.

How Long Does it Take to Improve AI Visibility?

It depends on your market and starting point. Triple Digital’s AI Visibility Audit ends with a prioritized 90-day strategy, so you know which fixes come first and can measure the change.

What if AI Says Something Wrong About my Firm?

Find the source. AI usually repeats outdated or inconsistent information from your website, directory listings, or third-party sites. Correcting those sources is the most reliable way to change what AI says.
